The attribution problem

Many AI answers never send a click. A person reads a recommendation in ChatGPT, then searches the brand name in Google or types the web address directly. Analytics records that visit as branded search or direct traffic, and the AI answer that started it stays invisible. Any attribution plan for AI search has to accept that gap and work around it.

What referral data can and cannot show

Some AI platforms pass a referrer when someone clicks a cited link, so visits from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai or copilot.microsoft.com can appear in GA4. Create a channel group for these referrers so they are reported together. Treat the numbers as a floor, not a total, because many platforms and apps strip the referrer.

Signal Where to find it Limit
AI referral sessions GA4 channel group for AI referrers Misses visits with no referrer
Branded search growth Search Console branded queries Also driven by PR, ads and word of mouth
Direct traffic to deep pages GA4 landing pages report Hard to separate from bookmarks
Self-reported source "How did you hear about us?" field Depends on memory and honesty

Assisted conversions

Look at conversion paths in GA4 rather than last click alone. If AI referral visits often appear early in paths that end in a branded search and a form fill, that pattern is worth reporting, even when the final click gets the credit.

Brand lift and survey methods

Add a short, optional source question to contact and checkout forms, with "AI assistant such as ChatGPT" as one of the choices. Track branded search impressions over time and compare them with periods when AI visibility sampling showed changes. Neither method proves cause on its own, but together they give a fair picture.

Reporting standard

  • Report AI referrals, branded search and survey answers side by side
  • State clearly which figures are measured and which are estimated
  • Compare periods of equal length and note seasonality
  • Never credit AI search with revenue the data cannot connect to it

Frequently asked questions

Can GA4 track visits from ChatGPT?

Partly. Clicks that pass a referrer from chatgpt.com can be grouped in GA4, but many visits arrive without one and show up as direct or branded search.

What is the simplest way to start?

Add an optional "How did you hear about us?" question to your forms and create a GA4 channel group for AI referrers.

Can AI search revenue be measured exactly?

No. Report what can be measured, label estimates clearly and avoid crediting revenue the data cannot connect.
