Why AI visibility needs its own measurement
Search Console shows how a site performs in Google results, but it says very little about whether ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google's AI Overviews mention a brand. AI answers change between sessions, locations and model versions, so a single screenshot proves almost nothing. A useful measurement plan samples answers on a schedule, records what was asked and when, and reports the spread of results instead of one lucky outcome.
Build a fixed prompt sample
Start with 30 to 50 questions a real customer would ask, grouped by intent: definitions, comparisons, recommendations and local searches. Write each one down exactly and keep the wording fixed between rounds. Changing the wording halfway through makes later results impossible to compare.
| Prompt group | Example question | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Definition | What is AI SEO? | Whether your explanation is the one being summarised |
| Comparison | Is SEO or Google Ads better for a dentist in Los Angeles? | Whether you are cited as a neutral source |
| Recommendation | Who are good AI marketing consultants? | Whether your name or brand is suggested |
| Local | Best digital marketing agency near Santa Monica | Whether local signals reach AI answers |
Capture citations consistently
For each prompt, record the platform, model or product version, date, location setting, whether you were signed in, the full answer text, every linked source and whether your brand or URL appears. Run each prompt at least three times per round, because a single answer can be an outlier.
Measure variance, not just mentions
Report how often a brand appears across repeated runs, for example 4 out of 9 answers, instead of a simple yes or no. Track the same figure over several months. A rise from 2 in 9 to 6 in 9 across stable prompts is a meaningful signal. A one-off appearance is not.
Report results honestly
- Show the prompt list, dates and platforms alongside every chart
- Separate brand mentions from linked citations, because only links can send visitors
- Note platform changes, such as a new model release, that happened during the period
- Never present a single favourable answer as typical
Interpret the results carefully
AI platforms decide what they cite, and no structured data or content format can guarantee inclusion. Measurement is there to show direction and to flag problems, such as an outdated description of the business that keeps being repeated. The fixes are the same as for good SEO: accurate entity information, clear answers, original evidence and consistent profiles. The AI SEO guide covers those fixes in detail.
Frequently asked questions
Can I track AI visibility like keyword rankings?
Not exactly. AI answers vary between runs, so track how often a brand appears across repeated samples rather than a single position.
Which AI platforms should I measure?
Start with the ones your customers use. For most businesses that means Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity.
Does schema markup guarantee AI citations?
No. Structured data helps systems understand a page, but each platform decides what it cites.
